Coimbra is one of Portugal’s oldest cities and is home to one of the world’s first universities. It was the capital of the country from 1139 to 1256 and its university was founded in 1290. Situated on a hill overlooking the city, the University of Coimbra with its colleges grew and evolved over more than seven centuries within the old town. The city and the surrounding region offer exceptional conditions for countless leisure activities, which range from the practice of several sports to numerous suggestions at cultural and artistic levels and to events in unique historical sceneries, just to mention some possibilities among many others.

The Zoological Garden already makes clear through its main entrance, the Elephant Gate, which was built in 1899, that it is an unique place to see. First opened to the public in 1844, the Berlin Zoo was built upon a gift bestowed to the city by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. It is Germany’s oldest zoo with its collection of round 16.000 animals including a predator, a hippo and a nocturnal animal house as well as the largest aviary located in Europe.
