The Tower of London is a 900-year-old castle and fortress in central London that is notable for housing the crown jewels and for holding many famous and infamous prisoners. Throughout its history, the tower has served many purposes: it housed the royal mint (until the early 19th century), a menagerie (which left in 1835), a records office, an armory and barracks for troops. Until the 17th century, it was also used as a royal residence.

Tower of London opens 9am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5.30pm Sunday and Monday (4.30pm winter). Last entry 30 minutes before closing. Closed December 24 to 26 and January 1.

The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs is an active paleontological dig site, which boasts the largest concentration of mammoth remains in the world. Current mammoth count is 61, with 58 Columbian and three woolly mammoths. Mammoths and other megafauna got trapped in a sinkhole and drown about 26,000 years ago. Their bones were buried and preserved.Paleontology is the study of pre-existing life based on fossils. A fossil could be an actual portion of the animal, such as bones, teeth, or shells, or maybe replaced by minerals such as silica, iron and manganese as in petrified wood. A fossil may also be a track or a trail, an imprint or a cast, anything that indicates preexisting life forms.

The Zoological Garden already makes clear through its main entrance, the Elephant Gate, which was built in 1899, that it is an unique place to see. First opened to the public in 1844, the Berlin Zoo was built upon a gift bestowed to the city by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. It is Germany’s oldest zoo with its collection of round 16.000 animals including a predator, a hippo and a nocturnal animal house as well as the largest aviary located in Europe. The zoo has two entrances, one is situated at the Hardenbergerplatz and the other entrance, at the Budapester Strasse.

Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. A National Monument is a protected area that is quickly declared by the President of the United States without the approval of Congress. Devils Tower sits across the state line in northeast Wyoming. It is 867 feet from its base to the summit. It stands 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River and is 5,112 feet above sea level. It was formed by the intrusion of igneous material. Devils Tower National Monument is open year-round 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Admission is $10 per vehicle and $5 for bicycles and pedestrians for a seven day pass.
