Masada Desert Fortress in Israel

Share/Bookmark

Masada is an ancient fortification in the Southern District of Israel situated on top of an isolated rock plateau, akin to a mesa. It is located on the eastern edge of the Judaean Desert, overlooking the Dead Sea 20 km east of Arad. The rhomboid-shaped mountain towers 434 metres above the level of the Dead Sea. It was built as a palace complex, in the classic style of the early Roman Empire, by Herod the Great, King of Judaea. Masada is one of the greatest archaeological sites in Israel and, perhaps, across the world. Its dramatic ascent can now be made by cable-car.

The Golan Heights – Under Cover of the Israel Air Force

Share/Bookmark

Israel’s mountainous northern region is known as the Golan Heights. It is one of the most beautiful and most traveled parts of the country. The Golan Heights rise from 400 to 1700 feet. Its western border is the Yarden River and its southern border is the Yarmuk River. The Golan is the headwaters of the Jordan river valley. The water sources in this area are very important to the survival of Israel. The Golan was captured from Syria in 1967 by Israel, whose aim was to put an end to the Syrian practice of shooting into Israeli settlements from the hills and mountains of the Heights.
