Lighthouses came into existence because ships could not see the rocks and other dangers in the water. A lighthouse is a building or other type of construction designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses or, in older times, from a fire and used as an aid to navigation. The most widely used materials are masonry, brick, concrete and steel. The first known lighthouse, the Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt, was completed about 280 B.C. It stood more than 350 feet tall until an earthquake destroyed it in the 1300s.

The Empire State Building was built by builders Starrett Bros. & Eken in 1931 and it was completed in one year and 45 days. The building itself cost $24,718,000 to build. The total cost for the Empire State Building was $40,948,900. The height of the building, including the lightning rod, is 1,454 feet (443.18 m). The measurement from the ground to the 102nd floor observatory is 1,224 feet (373.08 m) and from the ground to the 86th floor observatory is 1,050 feet (320.04 m).

The government has launched state grants aimed at encouraging motorists to buy environmentally-friendly electric cars. Transport Secretary said nine different electric car models would be eligible for a grant of up to 5,000 pounds ( 7,930 dollars).
