This old twelfth-century templar castle dominates from high above the crossing of the river Sil in the city of the same name. This was one of the most important military positions of the Knights Templar in the Iberian Peninsula. Located in the Royal Winter Road to Santiago de Compostela, one of the missions of the Templars was to protect pilgrims traveling to the capital of Galicia. It is made up of a polygonal precinct, over 8,000 metres square, with double and triple defences, which made this place one of the greatest fortresses in the north of Spain during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Castle Miranda has stood in Celles since 1866, Belgium, but has long been abandoned to decay and rot. When the French Revolution heated up, the politically active Liedekerke-Beaufort family were forced to abandon their castle in the Walloon region of southern Belgium. The castle is also known as Chateau Noisy after the children’s home it was turned into – following the Second World War – by the National Railway Company of Belgium for the children of employees. It stayed a children’s home until 1980. After becoming too expensive to maintain, Miranda Castle was abandoned in 1991. A fire in 1995 destroyed part of the roof, and dry rot has set into the wood. The building is still owned by Liedekerke-Beaufort family, who, following the fire, stripped the castle of its more valuable components.

About 50 miles north of New York City, there is a small, rocky island named Pollepel. On it stands what appears to be a crumbling Scottish castle. This is the remnant of a Scotsman’s fortress called Bannerman Castle, built not as a home, but as an arsenal for his immense collection of weapons. Bannerman Castle and Pollepel Island are closed to the public and accessible only through tours arranged by the Bannerman Castle Trust. Do not attempt to land on the island or enter the harbor surrounding the Island.

This vast underground vaulted hall was part of the fortified castle built in 1514. It was probably a weapons room before being used as a water reservoir. The underground chamber, measuring 34 meters by 34 meters, was constructed with five rows of five stone pillars. The cistern is famous especially for the thin layer of water that covers the floor, and which creates fine and exciting reflections from the little light there is and the spartan shapes of the columns and the roof.I

Castle is one of Europe’s finest Renaissance buildings, featuring a real moat, spires, a knight’s hall and ghastly creatures in its masonry. It was built in 1554 and it is located in the south of the Funen island, just about two hours Drive from the Copenhagen. The quaint island of Funen is also the birthplace of storyteller Hans Christian Anderson. The castle consists of two long buildings connected by a thick double wall, allowing defenders to abandon one house and continue fighting from the other. The double wall is over one meter thick and contains secret staircases and a well. Defenders were able to attack an enemy’s flanks from the two round corner towers. Other medieval defences include artillery ports, scalding holes and arrow slits.

Hearst Castle is located on California Highway 1, about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, near San Simeon, California, on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Driving time from either city is four to six hours. Hearst Castle featured 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 sitting rooms, 127 acres of gardens, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, a movie theater, an airfield, and the world’s largest private zoo. The Indoor pool appears to be styled after an ancient Roman bath such as the Baths of Caracalla in Rome c. 211-17 AD. The mosaic tiled patterns were inspired by mosaics found in the 5th Century Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna, Italy.
