What to See in Turkmenistan

Share/Bookmark

Turkmenistan is a Central Asian nation roughly the size of California. It shares borders with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. Primarily a desert country has a population of around six million people. Turkmenistan is located in an active seismic zone. Earth tremors can occur and there is a possibility of earthquakes. Officially tourism is welcomed, but onerous visa requirements discourage all but the most determined visitors. All visa applications made at Turkmen Embassies overseas are referred to Ashgabat for a decision. This can take 20 days or more. There is an accelerated 24 hours service, but a supplementary fee of approximately US$150 will be charged.

The Door to Hell in Darvaza aka Gas Crater

Share/Bookmark

A crater in the middle of the Karakum desert also called by the locals as the Gate to Hell. It is about 3 km of the main road. Hard to find. Best way to organize a guide with 4×4 car for one day. The Darvaza crater was created after an accident in the Soviet era while drilling for natural gas. It has been burning ever since. The flames burst out of the crater fueled by the natural gas. Today the crater is 60 meters across and easily 50 meters deep at its furthest point.
