Frederick Arthur Bridgman is best known for his painted visions of exoticized North African scenes and people. He was considered among the leading Orientalist artists of his time. During his long and prolific career, Bridgman traveled to Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Turkey and Syria to paint and document local customs. In 1881, at the peak of his popularity, Bridgman exhibited over three hundred works at the American Art Gallery in New York.
