Weird Mütter Museum

Share/Bookmark

The Mütter Museum was founded in 1858, when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter donated a collection of medical anomalies, anatomical and pathological specimens, and bizarre medical instruments to the museum. Its original purpose was to continue medical education and research in the heart of Philadelphia, located inside the headquarters of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Inside the Museum, you’ll find a wide smattering of abnormal body parts preserved in fluid. You’ll encounter skeletal formations — like that of a 7’6” man — that don’t seem quite possible. Diseased and enlarged organs are tastefully displayed within glass-encased oak frames. For the sake of comparison, illustrations of normal anatomical formations are cast in wax, plaster and papier mâché throughout the museum. Photography is not allowed in the Mütter.

Memorial and Museum – Concentration Camp Sachsenhausen

Share/Bookmark

More than 200,000 people were imprisoned here by the Nazis and some 50,000 were brutally murdered. Sachsenhausen was initially used to imprison political opponents. Later, the camp became a training ground for the SS and the site of the headquarters of the whole concentration camp system. After the Nazis were defeated, the Soviets used Sachsenhausen as a camp for their own political enemies. The Soviet Special Camp was called No. 7/No. 1. From 1945 to 1950, 60,000 people were imprisoned in these barracks by the Soviet Secret Service; around 12,000 of them died of hunger and sickness.

Aurora – Ship That Changed The World

Share/Bookmark

The cruiser Aurora was built between 1897 and 1900 in St. Petersburg and joined Russia’s Baltic fleet in 1903. The ship measures 126.8 meters in length, 16.8 meters in width and weighs a staggering 7,600 tons. Maintaining a speed of 20 knots it can travel independently for up to 1,440 sea miles. It took an active part in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 and participated in the Tsusima battle, in which most of Russia’s Pacific fleet was destroyed. After the war the ship was used for personnel training and during the October revolution of 1917 gave the signal by firing a blank shot to storm of the Winter Palace, which was being used as a residence by the democratic, but largely ineffective Provisional Government. That moment triggered a dramatic episode in Russia’s history and was the start of over 70 years of Communist leadership.

The Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses are the most significant archeological excavations of the 20th century. Chinese workers digging a well in 1974 made a startling discovery – thousands of life-size terracotta figures of an army prepared for battle. The soldiers are part of Shihuangdi’s tomb, located near the modern town of Xi’an, Shaanxi province in China. The excavation site is very large and only 30-40% of excavations are yet completed. Every warrior of army of as many as 8,000 life-sized is unique. The is nothing quite like this anywhere in the world.
