Wasa – Swedish War Ship in Stockholm

Share/Bookmark

Vasa is a Swedish warship built between 1626 and 1628. Built by 400 craftsmen at the royal shipyard at Stockholm, the ship was richly decorated as a symbol of the king’s ambitions for Sweden and himself. It was 69 meters long and was fitted with 64 cannons, and upon completion, it was of the most powerfully armed vessels in the world of that time. The ship foundered after sailing about 1,300 m into her maiden voyage on 10 August 1628. Around 30 people lost their lives. Vasa was mostly forgotten, until she was located and recovered from the shallow waters in 1961. With a largely intact hull, the ship was housed in a temporary museum called Wasavarvet until 1988 and then she was moved to the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.

Brussels is quickly gaining a reputation as city with its small town charm, trendy bars and restaurants, fabulous food, great nightlife, fantastic shopping, numerous museums, and other attractions. No trip to Brussels is complete without sampling the world-class chocolate for which Belgium is known. In a country with more than 2,000 chocolate shops, this is an easy mission to accomplish. This city is not just the capital of Belgium but unofficially also of the EU, and the home of a quiver of international organizations (NATO, the European Commission, the European Parliament and, of course, the European Brewery Convention).

Buzludzha – Forgotten Communist Monument

Share/Bookmark

Formally known as the House-Monument of the Bulgarian Communist Party, the monument at Buzludzha is like something out of a 1950s sci-fi movie. The saucer-shaped monument rises to a height of 107m, and was designed by the architect Georgi Stoilov. More than 60 Bulgarian artists collaborated on the design of murals for the site, and thousands of ‘volunteers’ were involved in the construction process, which took almost seven years to complete. In the 15 meter-high main hall of the memorial a 500 sq.m. fresco present portraits of Marx, Engels, Lenin and the Bulgarian communist leader Todor Zhivkov. The dome of the structure was covered with thirty tones of cooper. Two 12m stars of ruby glass was built-in on the top of the 70m high pylon of the monument that symbolizes a waving communist flag. The Soviet star which adorns the tower of Buzludzha was three times larger than that at the Kremlin. Built by the Bulgarian Communist regime in 1981, the 14,186,000 leva (£5.3million) Buzludzha Monument eventually became the headquarters for the Party. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, the building fell into a state disrepair and the Bulgarian government has neither the funds to renovate or destroy the structure. It sits atop a 1441 metre peak in the Balkan mountains, surrounded by open space, hilly terrain and miles and miles of nothingness. Now the monument lies abandoned and ruined, its doors closed to the public.

St. Basil’s Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Intercession, is located on Red Square, beside the Moscow Kremlin. It is one of the most outstanding and remarkable monuments of Old Russian architecture. It was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible to celebrate his conquest of the Tatar city of Kazan on October 1, 1552, the day of the feast of the Intercession. Originally, St Basil’s Cathedral was white sided with gilded domes. The colorful patterns on the domes were not added until about a century after the cathedral was erected.
